A Guide to Blackout & Darker Bedrooms

Welcome to the confusing world of inner tent bedrooms! Most modern family tents have Blackout or darkened bedrooms, in order to aid a better night’s sleep. Early morning sunlight can be a curse in the height of summer, when it awakens you too soon. Coleman were the first to coin and patent the phrase “Blackout” bedrooms. Consumer demand dictated that younger families or light sleepers needed a darker bedroom. However, as time has gone by each brand has introduced their own versions of the Blackout bedroom, each with different advantages.

Coleman Blackout Bedroom Features:

Coleman patented their Blackout Bedrooms, which were a revolutionary step in sleep systems for tents. The Blackout bedroom is designed to block out 99% of daylight, giving a truly darker bedrooms. Ideal for parents with young children, allowing you to choose which time they go to bed, and get up each morning.

Outdoor Revolution Darkened Inner Tents

Outdoor Revolution tent inners are also a little bit darker than regular tent inners, by using their Twilight fabric, which reduces early morning light. In addition to this, the Outdoor Revolution inner tents offer greater depth to them, which makes them more ideal for camp beds or queen sized airbeds.

Vango Bedrooms

Vango have multiple inner tents, depending on which of their tent collections you buy into. Confusing as it is - essentially, the higher the range of product - the darker / better the inner tent is. Below is a guide to which bedroom each collection of tents uses:

Lights Out Bedrooms:

These have been used traditionally for years - using a darker fabric to reduce the amount of early morning light. These inner tents are not a complete blackout, and sunlight will still make its way into the tent of an early morning, but the effects of it will be lessened.

Nightfall Bedrooms:

New for 2020 - are starting to make a darker bedroom, which really does start to eclipse the early morning light - but not fully black it out. Helping you to sleep for far longer.

  • Breathable fabric, to reduce condensation.

Midnight Bedrooms:

These bedrooms are new for 2020, and offer a great night’s sleep with a darkened fabric, which is breathable and reduces condensation within the tent. Midnight bedrooms are the closest thing to a Coleman Blackout bedroom, offering a supremely darker inner tent, which eliminates most early morning light.

Outwell Bedroom Types

Premier Bedrooms

The Outwell bedrooms are now full dark inner tents, for a better night's sleep, undisturbed by early morning light. Premier bedrooms offer ample floor space, plus mains cable entry points for power points to be put into the bedrooms. Internal pockets also allow for storage of essential items inside the inner tent.

Ambassador Master Bedrooms

Ambassador master bedrooms also offer full dark inner tents. The master bedrooms offer greater height throughout the inner tent, and offer additional length bedrooms, which are ideal for queen airbeds, or camp beds. The bedrooms allows main cable access, and will also have space for bedside tables for additional comfort.

Quick and Quiet Inners

Versatile bedroom doors are a new design for 2020, and feature on all Outwell family tents going forward from 2020. They offer a superb magnetic access point, which allow the user to forego the traditional and loud zips. Ideal for those who have young children they wish to check on during the course of the night. The quick and quiet inners also have a zip entry also.

360 Access Doors

All Outwell tents now feature the 360 access doors, which have a lower walk-in pelmet, to avoid tripping on the fabric of the inner tent and damaging it. Additionally, the inner doors have four zip sliders, which allow the inner tent door to be operated in several ways. This allows the doors to be partially open for ventilation purposes, or to keep an eye on the children. Further to this, the doors can be completely unzipped and tucked away into a pocket at the side, allowing the inner tents to be completely aired out.

Zempire Inner Tents

Zempire also use light diffusing technology in their fabrics to create a very darkened inner tent. It allows for a better night's sleep.
