Caravanning and Camping in the Lake District

Camping in the "Great Outdoors" can be truly invigorating, especially when your tent is pitched in the Lake District National Park; an area of outstanding natural beauty. Imagine pulling back your tent flap first thing in the morning to reveal stunning views while breathing in a lung full of crisp, clean air. Heavenly!

There are hundreds of campsites dotted throughout the Lake District National Park, but here's ten of the best. The list is compiled in no particular order and inclusion of campsites is based upon a combination of location, facilities offered, value for money and general ambience of the site.

    1. Stonethwaite Campsite

    Stonethwaite Campsite

    Stonethwaite, Borrowdale, Cumbria, CA12 5XG

Our first campsite is in the village of Stonethwaite found close to the large town of Keswick. Perfectly placed in the shadow of impressive Skiddaw on the shores of Derwentwater, Keswick offers a number of tourist attractions, including a unique museum that features cars from films and TV, many pubs, shops and restaurants.

Stonethwaite campsite offers basic facilities, no showers nor any hot water, and is found off the beaten track. It is certainly not one for those seeking glamping! But, it is in a charming location oozing a relaxed and rustic ambience. The location and scenery is truly breath-taking and worth a night's camping just for morning view alone!

Sample prices: Adults, £5; Kids (over 5, under 15) £3.

The Ullswater Lake Steamer northern terminus is also only a short walk away from Park Foot, as are a variety of excellent walking trails.

As well as tents, accommodation in static caravans and lodges is also offered at Park Foot. The facilities are definitely superior, offering hot showers, mini-market, children's play area, an extensive Country Club entertainment complex and even internet access – if you really can't leave the web at home!

It's ideal for fishermen, walkers and mountain bikers alike and only a stone's throw from Hellvellyn, in the shadow of Glenridding at the southern end of Ullswater.
